Second Annual Bicycle Tour
July 27-28, 2013

Picture
To all our returning cyclists we say, Welcome Back! To all new cyclists, Welcome to our 200 km tour to raise funds for our home for the recovery of people exploited by human trafficking.  Our tour begins at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School in Sylvan Lake.  We want to get started by 8:00 am,  so, people traveling a long distance are welcome to stay at the school the night before our departure. We cycle to Sanctum Retreat Center, near Caroline, the first day and return to Sylvan the next day.  You can request a registration form and pledge sheet through our Contact page.  A registration fee of $100 will cover all meals and accommodations for both days.

To the public we say, please support our cyclists.   Last year the twenty cyclists raised $15,000.  With your support we can raise that to $20,000 and will hopefully raise enough money to open our home this fall.

Freedom Walk 2013          A Huge Success

A huge thanks to all who came out to support our 10 km Walk.  You and your generous donors helped us raise almost $9,000.  We could not do this without your support.  This year we featured,Team United,Team Streams and Team Franciscans along  with 20 other individuals.  Thank you to Councilor Tara Veer, from City of Red Deer, for welcoming all our participants. Our Society President indicated that human trafficking is the second largest and fastest growing criminal activity in the world today.    At the half way point all participants enjoyed some refreshments at Bower Ponds chalet.

More than 100 people attended our Dessert Gala this year.  Codi Kreil entertained the crowd with her upbeat music while guests enjoyed some tasty desserts. She has released two CD's already and is planning a third, soon.   Megan MacInyre, a psychologist from Healing Paths Counselling in Sylvan Lake, shared information on the kind of long term care  that victims of trafficking required and expressed her delight that Magdalene House Society was planning to offer the care that is necessary for both men and women.  Her research indicates  that more public money is used to help endangered animals than exploited people.City Counselor, Diane Wyntjes read out the proclamation that from this day forward the twenty second day of February will be known as Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Red Deer

Dawnette Hill took the podium to conduct our dessert auction.  In her usual matter of fact entertaining way she discovered that our guests were very generous.

Another board member, Marian Cloutier and her husband Richard (top right photo) have decided to ride their tandem bike 1200 km from Vancouver to Caroline in July to raise money for Magdalene House Society.  They will join up with other cyclists who will ride 200 km from Sylvan to Caroline on July 27-28.  We would love to have YOU join in our second annual Bicycle Tour.  You can register for this tour through the website contact button.

Fifty-one golfers spent a beautiful day at Whispering Pines Golf and Country Club on Friday Sept. 21 to support our Society.  They enjoyed a lunch provided by the Knights of Columbus and a roast beef dinner catered by Whispering Pines Golf and Country Club.  We had several silent auction items for participants to bid on and one of the golfers walked away with $235 from our 50/50 draw

Thank you to everyone who donated items for our silent auction and to all our hole sponsors. We encourage those who read this to support these donors, whenever possible.

$15,000 raised in First annual Bicycle Tour for
Magdalene House Society

Picture
Twenty cyclists from all over Alberta rode from Sylvan Lake to Caroline and back on July 28-29,2012.  This two day, 185 km ride takes a great deal of effort and our expression of gratitude seems so inadequate.  On the Saturday evening, the cyclists were able to rest up for the next day's ride at Sanctum Retreat Center, a few kilometers west of Caroline.  We want everyone involved to know that we appreciate the physical and mental effort you exerted on behalf of Magdalene House Society

Thanks to our volunteers who provided support vehicles along the route.  Our hat is off for those who prepared food on route and at Sanctum and Mother Teresa School in Sylvan
Thank you to Red Deer Catholic Regional School Division for allowing us to use the school for the start and finish of our bike tour.  It takes a community to make a bike tour successful.

We hope all the cyclists will return next year and convince others to join us for next year's tour.
